LONDON (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy, winner of the silver medal for the leading amateur in last month's British Open at Carnoustie, will make his Walker Cup debut next month.

The 18-year-old from Northern Ireland was named on Monday in a Britain and Ireland team which also includes Jonathan Caldwell, Rhys Davies, Nigel Edwards, David Horsey, Llewellyn Matthews, Jamie Moul, John Parry, Lloyd Saltman and Daniel Willett.

"We have picked a strong team that is more than capable of defeating the Americans," said Tony Disley, chairman of the Royal & Ancient selection committee, in a news release.

Saltman, Davies and Edwards were members of the side beaten 12 1/2 points to 11 1/2 in Chicago two years ago.

The biennial team competition will be held at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland on September 8-9.
