Furyk pulls out of Ohio event with back injury02.08.2007 15:00 SportsBy Mark Lamport-Stokes AKRON, Ohio (Reuters) - American Jim Furyk pulled out of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Thursday because of a back injury, casting doubt on his fitness for next week's PGA Championship. The world number two, who won his 13th PGA Tour title at the Canadian Open on Sunday, experienced pain while practising on Tuesday and decided to withdraw before the opening round. One of the hottest players in the game over the last two months, Furyk would rank among the favourites for the final major of the year at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. "I would love to try to be prepared and ready to go at the PGA but, if that's not the case, I just need to get healthy and strong," the 37-year-old told reporters at Firestone Country Club. "I've had a good stretch the last few months of playing, so it's a little easier to handle." Furyk has posted five top-five finishes in his last seven starts, including a one-shot victory at the Canadian Open where he became the first player to win successive titles in 56 years. The 2003 U.S. Open champion also enjoys a good record at Firestone, with six top-10 placings in the last eight years. "I'm a little disappointed after playing so well last week and coming to a place that is probably in my top five events," he said. "I love this golf course and getting the chance to come here but obviously the first thing is getting healthy." Source: reuters.comwww.alllee.com |
